PROJECT DESCRIPTION
AQUAPONICS POD - BIENNALE 2010
Project Description:
Our POD negotiates between interior and exterior environments. The main idea is to provide a unit of small-scale furniture that, like a Chinese box, unfolds to both the exterior and interior. The main feature is an aquaponics tank. It is basically a fish tank (3), a waste water tank (1) and a series of grow shelves (2). The fish in the interior tank produce waste which is pumped into a flood tank. The nutrition-rich water in the flood tank is then used to grow plants in grow shelves that are attached to the façade and exposed to sunlight. The plants continuously clean the water, recycling it for reuse in the fish tank. The mechanical pump is powered with solar energy. The aquaponics pod is a low-tech solution for a small-scale, individual greenhouse. It introduces a garden to your living room. It offers additional features like a balcony, a bed, a whirlpool, and a mini bar which can be selected as options to further customize the pod. This small-scale feature has the potential to transform an entire housing block into a green block.
